In honour of my new play, BIG IN GERMANY, which is all about Canadian rock music and growing up in Toronto in the 1990s, I’m going to share a CanCon music video everyday. BIG IN GERMANY plays at Buddies in Bad Times April 9-21. Get tickets here.
No big story today. I’m just hungover, and this song pretty accurately captures what I’m feeling right now.
This is also great getting the night started music and we used to use it as pre-show music for Big In Germany. Our techs in Dublin loved it. I would have been in fifth grade the first time I heard this one.
Did you notice that this video is from MuchMusic’s old request show RSVP, and that they’ve highlighted that this was a “FAX REQUEST”? If you’re too young to remember, faxes were like proto-e-mails. You’d scan a paper letter in a fax machine, which would send it to another machine via your phone line, and that machine would print out a copy of your letter, often on a strange waxy paper that came in rolls. This was so high-tech and cutting edge, that MuchMusic actually named a couple shows after Fax Machines. The 90s were weird sometimes.
